TikToker Holding Phone

What is a TikToker?

A TikToker is someone who creates and shares short form video content on TikTok, either as a hobby or as a way to earn money online.

With millions of active users and constant demand for new content, TikTok has become one of the fastest growing platforms for digital creators.

For many, TikTok is more than just posting videos - it’s a business.

Creators can earn income through the Creator Fund, brand collaborations, affiliate links, gifts and tips, and even product sales linked to Shopify via the TikTok pixel.

As income streams grow, so does the complexity of managing them.

Tracking earnings, expenses, and tax obligations can quickly become overwhelming, which is where our TikTok tax specialists come in.

Female TikToker Counting Money

Why Hiring a TikTok Tax Expert Can Help

Making money on TikTok rarely follows a standard pattern. Income can come from multiple sources, paid at different times, often without a clear paper trail.

As things grow, staying on top of it all becomes harder, and that’s where a TikTok tax expert adds real value.

Rather than second-guessing what HMRC expects, you get clarity, structure, and confidence in how your income is handled:

  • Save Time & Cut Admin: We take the day-to-day admin off your hands, tracking income, organising expenses, and handling your tax return, so you can stay focused on content and growth.
  • Stay HMRC Compliant: TikTok income is under increasing scrutiny. We make sure everything is declared correctly and submitted on time, reducing the risk of fines, penalties, or unwanted HMRC attention.
  • Keep More of What You Earn: From Creator Fund payments to gifts, affiliate income, and TikTok-driven sales, we help you claim legitimate expenses and structure your income tax-efficiently.

The end result is less stress, fewer surprises, and a financial setup that actually supports your growth - not one that holds you back!

  • VAT Guidance for TikTok Creators: As your earnings grow, VAT can become an issue sooner than expected. We’ll assess whether you need to register, explain how VAT applies to TikTok-related income, and advise on schemes that could reduce what you owe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a TikTok Tax Accountant?

A TikTok tax accountant is a specialist who understands the unique financial landscape of TikTok content creators. From Creator Fund, brand partnerships, affiliate links, gifts, or TikTok-driven e-commerce, they offer tailored advice to help creators stay compliant, reduce their tax liability, and manage multiple income streams with ease.

Does TikTok report income to HMRC?

Yes. From 1 January 2024, TikTok has agreed to share information about UK content creators with HMRC. This includes data relating to income earned through:

  • The Creator Fund
  • The Creativity Program (Beta)
  • Gifts that are cashed out
  • TikTok Shop sales and related earnings

This information sharing forms part of HMRC’s wider efforts to improve transparency around online income and ensure creators are declaring what they earn.

Because HMRC can now receive data directly from TikTok, it’s more important than ever to make sure all TikTok income you receive is declared accurately on your Self Assessment tax return. Any mismatch between reported income and platform data could trigger an enquiry.

If you’re unsure what needs declaring or how this affects you, getting advice early can help avoid unnecessary stress or penalties.

Do I have to pay tax on TikTok income?

Yes. If you earn money from TikTok and your total income from self-employment or side hustles exceeds £1,000 in a tax year, HMRC requires you to declare it. TikTok income is treated as self-employed trading income, not casual earnings.

This includes money earned from the Creator Fund, brand deals, sponsored posts, affiliate links, gifts, tips, and sales made through TikTok Shop or linked e-commerce sites. Once you pass the £1,000 trading allowance, you must register for Self Assessment and submit a tax return declaring all relevant income and allowable expenses.

Does TikTok take 50%?

TikTok does not take 50% of all creator earnings, but it does apply a 50% platform fee to virtual gifts.

When viewers buy coins and send gifts during live streams, TikTok keeps around 50% of the coin value as a platform fee. The remaining amount is credited to the creator and can be withdrawn (subject to TikTok’s payout rules).

It’s important to note:

  • This 50% cut applies only to gifts, not all TikTok income
  • Other income streams such as Creator Fund payments, brand deals, affiliate income, or TikTok Shop sales are paid differently and are not subject to the same 50% gift fee

From a UK tax perspective, HMRC is concerned with what you actually receive, not the gross amount before TikTok’s cut. The net amount paid to you is what must be declared as income on your Self Assessment tax return.

Will TikTok send me a tax form?

No. TikTok does not issue UK tax forms such as a P60 or tax return summary for HMRC.

Instead, TikTok provides earnings dashboards, payout statements, and transaction histories within your creator account. These show what you’ve been paid through features like the Creator Fund, gifts, and TikTok Shop, but it’s still your responsibility to keep records and declare the income correctly to HMRC via Self Assessment.

HMRC does not require a specific TikTok tax form. What matters is that you accurately report the income you actually received, along with any allowable expenses, by the relevant deadlines. If you’re unsure how to interpret TikTok’s statements or what needs declaring, getting professional advice can help ensure everything is filed correctly.

Is it a legal requirement to have an accountant?

No, having an accountant is not a legal requirement in the UK. You’re allowed to manage your own bookkeeping and submit your own Self Assessment tax return.

However, you are legally responsible for ensuring your tax return is accurate, complete, and submitted on time. Mistakes, missed income, or late filings can lead to HMRC penalties or enquiries.

Many TikTok creators choose to work with an accountant because of the complexity of multiple income streams, platform reporting, and changing HMRC rules. While optional, professional support can reduce risk, save time, and help ensure you don’t pay more tax than necessary.
